Afternoon Tea at La Motte

This next afternoon tea of my series wasn’t an actual afternoon tea. It was the afternoon and we had tea, but it wasn’t an organised afternoon tea you pay for at a hotel/restaurant. I had such a good time that I wanted to share the experience and the afternoon tea series was the perfect place for that.

It was a rainy day and we headed out to visit a few farms around Stellenbosch, South Africa. After a lovely lunch at Tokara and spending some time walking around Franschhoek, we passed by the La Motte wine farm. We visited the wine tasting site which included a room in which they store the wine barrels. It was lovely.

We decided not to do wine tasting but to grab tea instead so we headed to the restaurant of La Motte, Pierneef. It’s a gorgeous restaurant and they sat us in the couch area (because we were only there for tea). It was comfortable and fun. We were sitting by the fireplace (not that we needed it) and there were interesting books on the table. Wonderful decor!

I ordered a traditional (African) rooibos tea while the girls ordered some cappuccinos.  We then each ordered some desserts to create our own little afternoon tea. I ordered two because I really wanted to taste both (and why not splurge a tiny bit in such a lovely restaurant, right?): a blueberry tart and a custard slice (or mille-feuille). They were both delicious. In the end, I didn’t finish the blueberry tart and just brought it home so I could finish it later (giving the waitress a bit of a scare).

Yes this is me sitting on the floor of a fancy wine farm restaurant….I found it easier to sit down than to eat my pastry over myself. Let’s be honest it was falling everywhere on me and I felt totally absurd…why I felt less absurd sitting on the floor? I don’t really know…

I won’t give this afternoon tea a rating because it wasn’t really an afternoon tea. I will leave you on this note, however: I love to hang out with my friends, I love tea and pastries and visiting new places and my afternoon at Pierneef filled all of those requirements. If you’re ever in the Stellenbosch area, I recommend dropping by La Motte. xx
